Novak Djokovic (Serbia) won his 10th singles title at the Australian Open on 29 January 2023, having previously won the tournament at Melbourne Park in 2008, 2011–13, 2015–16 and 2019–21. Serena Williams was a seven-time Australian Open singles champion between 2003 and 2017, and Switzerland’s Roger Federer also took home the singles trophy on seven occasions, in 2004, 2006–07, 2010 and 2017–18.

Before the open era began in 1968, when professionals were allowed to compete alongside amateurs at tennis’ four Grand Slam tournaments, home favourite Roy Emerson (1961 and 1963–67) claimed six singles crowns in Australia. Overall, Australia’s Margaret Court (1960–66, 1969–71 and 1973) leads the way with 11 Australian Open victories – seven of which were won before the dawn of the open era. The first-ever Australian Open tournament was staged in 1905.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner’s most recent success saw him overcome Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets (6-3, 7-6, 7-6) in Melbourne, thus drawing level with Rafael Nadal on 22 major titles. Djokovic is one of only two men in Grand Slam history to win as many as nine singles crowns at one tournament, alongside Rafael Nadal (14 wins at the French Open, in 2005–08, 2010–14, 2017–20 and 2022).

The Serbian became the first player to win three successive open-era titles at the Australian Open (2011–13), a trick he repeated in 2019–21. Other multiple singles champions in Melbourne include four-time winners Jack Crawford (1931–33 and 1935), Ken Rosewall (1953, 1955 and 1971–72) and Andre Agassi (1995, 2000–01 and 2003).
