Rafael Nadal (Spain) won his 14th French Open singles title on 5 June 2022, defeating Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 in the final on Court Philippe-Chatrier in Paris. Nadal, 36, had previously been crowned French Open champion in 2005-08, 2010-14 and 2017-20.

Nadal has won all 14 of the finals he’s contested at the French Open and has accumulated 112 wins (from 115 matches in total) since making his debut there in 2005. Nadal’s 2022 triumph came 17 years to the day after claiming his first title in Paris, against Argentina’s Mariano Puerta on 5 June 2005. At 36 years 2 days old, Nadal (b. 3 June 1986) became the oldest men’s singles champion at the French Open, surpassing Spain’s Andrés Gimeno (b. 3 August 1937), who was 34 years 306 days old on 4 June 1972. The French Open has been contested since 1891. Home favourite Max Decugis is the second-most successful man at the tournament (previously known as the French Championships), winning eight titles in 1903-04, 1907-09 and 1912-14. In the open era (since 1968), Sweden’s Björn Borg, with six titles (1974-75 and 1978-81), is Nadal’s closest challenger at Roland Garros.
