Who
Asanokiri
When
13 May 2000
On 13 May 2000, during the May Tournament at the Kokugikan, Sumida-ku, Tokyo, Japan, sandanme rikishi Asanokiri, from Wakayama Prefecture lost a bout against opponent Chiyohakuho because his loin cloth fell off, the first time in the 83 years since the introduction of the law that a bout has been settled in this fashion. The fight was being shown live on television and was stopped after a ringside Sumo elder saw Asanokiri's genitals exposed when his mawashi (belt) fell off. The mawashi are about 8m 26ft long and are wrapped tightly several times around the wrestler's expansive bodies. Asanokiri said: "I tied my mawashi the way I always do, but today it just came loose."
