Pope John Paul II has visited 125 countries since becoming the 263rd successor to St. Peter on 16 October 1978, aged 58. His most recent visit was to Malta on 8 May 2001. In total he has made 193 trips abroad. As the Vicar of Christ he has consecrated each place that he has visited to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

He was the first non-Italian chosen as Pope in 456 years and the youngest in the 20th century.
