On 4 October 2019, endurance ice swimmer Ger Kennedy (Ireland) became the first man to complete the Ice Sevens, when he swam his seventh ice mile in 36 minutes 55 seconds in 3.90°C (39°F) water, under International Ice Swimming Association rules, in the Laguna del Inca in Portillo, Valparaíso Region, Chile.

The Ice Sevens Challenge (or Ice Sevens) is based on the concept of the Seven Summits and Oceans Seven and was conceived and developed by Ger Kennedy and Steven Munatones (of the World Open Water Swimming Association), around 2016, with the support of and governance by the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA). The swimmer must complete an ice mile (an officially recognized non-wetsuit ice swim by a solo individual in water at 5°C / 41°F or less) under standard ice swimming rules (i.e., no wetsuit and no neoprene hat) in Europe, Oceania, Asia, North America, Africa, South America and at any Polar location (at 60° S or below or 70° N or above). One of the seven swims must be a documented "Zero Ice Mile" (defined as a solo mile swim performed at sub 1°C (33.8°F). All the swims must be ratified or recognized by IISA.

Kennedy's previous six ice mile swims were as follows:

- Europe: 16 January 2016, in Armagh, Northern Ireland, UK, in Wild Water Armagh pool, in 0.77°C (33.4°F) water, in 32 minutes 30 seconds.

- Arctic Circle: 6 March 2017, in the sea off Mikkelvik Brygge, Ringvassøya, Norway, at 70° N, in 2.53°C (36.5°F) water, in 34 minutes 5 seconds.

- Asia: 9 December 2017, in an ice pool cut into a frozen lake in Tyumen, Russia, in 0.5°C (32.9°F) water in 43 minutes 10 seconds (this was a 1.25-mi/2-km swim).

- Africa: 13 February 2017, in Lake Ouiouane, Khenifra, Morocco, in 3.77°C (38.8°F) water, in 37 minutes 10 seconds.

- North America: 22 February 2018, in the sea off M Street Beach, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, in 4.77°C (40.6°F) water, in 32 minutes 15 seconds.

- Oceania: 1 June 2019, in Thredbo Reservoir, New South Wales, Australia, in 2.8°C (37°F) water, in 38 minutes 2 seconds.

Kennedy's final swim in Chile was performed in a lake in the Andes at an altitude of 2,853 m (9,360 ft) above sea level. He has subsequently performed an ice mile swim in Antarctica, covering 1.03 mi (1.66 km) in Paradise Bay at 64.90° S on 24 February 2020.

The first person to complete the Ice Sevens was Jaimie Monahan (USA) who swam her seventh ice mile in 29 minutes 5 seconds in the Beagle Channel, near Ushuaia, Argentina, on 2 July 2017.
