The 41,127 tons gross container ship Sea-Land Galloway and its seven SL-7 type sisters had a service speed of 33 knots (61.12 km/h; 37.98 mph). Built in Germany and Holland in 1972–73 for Sea-Land Services Inc, they measured 288.4 m long by 32.26 m on the beam (946 ft by 106 ft) and could carry 2,192 TEU (816 35ft units + 400 TEU).

Two steam turbines developing 120,000 shp drove two shafts. In August 1973, Sea-Land Exchange crossed the Atlantic eastbound at 34.97 knots (64.76 km/h; 40.24 mph) and Sea-Land Commerce holds the Pacific record, averaging 33.216 knots (59.66 km/h; 37.07 mph).

Following the oil prices rises of the 1970s, they were no longer economic and were sold to the US Navy in 1981–82. Converted into fast military transports with ro-ro facilities, they were renamed after celestial bodies and one reportedly reached 38 knots (70.38 km/h; 43.73 mph) during post-refit trials.
