Global Creature Technology of Melbourne, Australia, created a 1.1-tonne (2,425-lb) puppet of King Kong for a musical of the same name, which opened in Melbourne on 15 June 2013. Its bulk and weight makes it the largest marionette for an indoors stage show, although at 6 m (20 ft) it may not be the tallest puppet to have appeared on stage.

After some revisions, it transferred to Broadway in New York on 8 November 2018 and ran to 18 August 2019. On stage, King Kong was suspended on cables but also had a team of 35 on-and off-stage manipulators. It was part marionette, part rod-puppet and part animatronic. Its animatronic facial features were controlled remotely from behind the audience. It is also one of the most complex puppets ever created, with 45 axes of movement, from eyelids to elbows.
