The oldest swimming world champion is Nicholas Santos (Brazil, b. 14 February 1980), who was aged 42 years 303 days when he won the men’s 50 metres butterfly at the 2022 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in Melbourne, Australia, on 14 December 2022.
Santos announced his retirement after winning gold in Melbourne in a championship-record time of 21.78 seconds – just 0.03 seconds outside his shared short course world record. It was his fourth career victory in the event.
