Tanya Chua’s (Singapore) sixth career nomination for Best Mandarin Album, for her 12th studio release DEPART (2021), produced her first category win at the 33rd Golden Melody Awards at Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Arena on 2 July 2022. Chua, who had previously been nominated in for Amphibian (2006), Goodbye & Hello (2008), If You See Him (2010), Sing It Out of Love (2012) and Aphasia (2016), tied the six Best Mandarin Album nominations for Taiwanese singer Jay Chou (in 2005, 2008–09, 2011, 2013 and 2015). Chou won the prize for The Era in 2011.
At the 33rd Golden Melody Awards, Chua won Album of the Year, Best Mandarin Album and Best Female Mandarin Singer, and DEPART won Best Album Recording. Chua became the first artist to win Album of the Year and Best Mandarin Album at the same ceremony.
Founded in 1990, the Golden Melody Awards are regarded as the Chinese-speaking world’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards. Since 2007, the event has hosted two ceremonies each year, in recognition of the best Popular and Traditional music.
