The first season of the American historical TV drama Shōgun (FX, 2024) won 18 of its 25 nominations at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, in September 2024. The 10-episode series – featuring a predominantly Japanese cast – became the first non-English-language winner of the award for Outstanding Drama Series, and its main characters were recognized as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga) and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko). Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series went to Frederick E O Toye (Fringe, The Good Wife, Person of Interest) for his contribution to the ninth episode, “Crimson Sky”. Shōgun’s other 14 awards were presented a week earlier at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards – also hosted by the Peacock Theater – and included Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Néstor Carbonell as Vasco Rodrigues in the series premiere, “Anjin”) and awards (among others) for casting, cinematography, production design, sound editing, visual effects and stunt performance.
Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks (both USA), Shōgun is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name. It premiered on FX on Hulu on 27 February 2024.
