The largest scorpion ever found was a specimen of Heterometrus swannerdami found during the Second World War in the village of Krishnarajapuram, India and measured 29.2 cm (11.5 in) in overall length from the tips of the pedipalps or 'pincers' to the end of the sting.
The tropical emperor or imperial scorpion (Pandinus imperator) of West Africa also grows to 180 mm (7 in); the largest on record is a male from Sierra Leone which measured 229 mm (9 in).
The tropical African species Pandinus giganticus may reach nearly 200 mm (7.8 in) in length. Heterometrus swannerdami is from southern India. Males of this species frequently attain a length of more than 180 mm (7 in).
