The greatest wing-span of any known bird belonged to the South American teratorn (Argentavis magnificens), a superficially vulture-like species, which lived 6–8 million years ago. Fossil remains found in Buenos Aires, Argentina, give an estimate spread of 7.6 m (25 ft).
