The Africanized honey bee (<em>Apis mellifera scutellata</em>), is descended from the African sub-species and will generally only attack when provoked but is persistent in pursuit. It is very aggressive and fiercely protective of territories up to 0.2–0.5 miles (0.4–0.8 kilometres) from its nest. Although its venom is no more potent than that of other bees, because it attacks in swarms the result can be death due to the number of stings inflicted.
