Blue whales ( Balaenoptera musculus) are the largest mammals measuring an average of 25 m (80 ft) long. They feed on krill (euphausiids), tiny shrimp-like creatures about 50 mm (2 in) in length.
On average blue whales eat about 900-4,100 kg (3,000–9,000 lb) of krill a day during the feeding season. They can weigh approximately 120 tonnes and some can dive to a depth of 3,048 m (10,000 ft). It has been calculated that a single breath from a mature blue whale can inflate 2,000 balloons! As water and krill rush into the whale's mouth, more than 60 throat pleats expand so that the whale's throat forms an enormous bag that catches all the food. It then partially closes its mouth leaving a small gap and forces water past 270–390 pairs of wide, black, fringed baleen plates that hang from the roof of its mouth. The plates act as a sieve catching food inside the fringes.
