The largest of all existing bivalve shells is that of the marine giant clam (Tridacna gigas), found on the Indo-Pacific coral reefs. One specimen measuring 115 cm (3 ft 9.25 in) in length and weighing 333 kg (734 lb) was collected off Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan, in 1956 but was not scientifically examined until August 1984. It probably weighed just over 340 kg (750 lb) when it was alive.
