The smallest chelonian is speckled cape tortoise or speckled padloper (Homopus signatus) which has a shell length of between 6–9.6 cm (2.3-3.7 in). 'Padloper' is Afrikaans for 'road walker'. The smallest marine turtle in the world is the Atlantic ridley (Lepidochelys kempii), which has a shell length of 50–70 cm (20–28 in) and a maximum weight of 80 kg (176 lb).
