The sequence in Charlie Chaplin's (UK) City Lights (USA 1931) in which a blind flower girl played by Virginia Cherrill (USA), sells the little tramp a flower in the mistaken belief he is a wealthy tycoon, took 342 takes.
Chaplin kept re-shooting because he could not think of a satisfactory way of making the girl think he was rich. Finally he found a simple solution. Chaplin is seen trying to cross a street jammed with traffic. Unable to reach the sidewalk, he sees a limousine parked by the kerb, gets in at one door and out at the other. The girl hears the door close and assumes it is the owner getting out. She hands him the flower, takes his last quarter and keeps the change.
