The youngest at which anybody has been elected to a chair in a university is 19 years in the case of Colin Maclaurin (1698-1746), who was elected to Marischal College, Aberdeen as Professor of Mathematics on 30 September 1717. In 1725 he was made Professor of Mathematics at Edinburgh University on the recommendation of Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), who was a professor at Cambridge at the age of 26.
