Founded in 1680 by Louis XIV, the Comédie Française is the oldest National Theatre in the world. During the Revolution (1789) the company split: the conservatives went to the Théâtre de la Nation, the more revolutionary actors became the Théâtre de la République at the Palais Royal. In 1803 the Comédie Française was reformed and has remained in being ever since.
