The largest system of levees every built is that around the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Begun in 1717, they now extend for over 6,000 km. (3,700 miles) largely thanks to the disastrous floods of 1927, which resulted in a massive federal building program. In this project, over 765 million cu. m. (1 billion cu. yd.) of earth was used.
