The tallest tower is the Tokyo Skytree, formerly known as New Tokyo Tower, which rises 634 m (2,080 ft) to the top of the mast and is located in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan. The construction is a broadcasting, restaurant and observation tower and was completed in February 2012.

As defined by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat a tower is a structure where less than 50% of the total height is useable floor space.

The Tokyo Skytree structure is the centrepiece of a massive commercial development located equidistant from Narihirabashi Station and Oshiage Station.

One of Tokyo Skytree's main purposes is as a television and radio broadcasting tower. Tokyo's previous broadcasting tower, Tokyo Tower (333 m or1,093 ft) was no longer tall enough to give complete digital terrestrial television broadcasting coverage because it is surrounded by many high-rise buildings.
