On 26 April 1989, the towns of Saturia and Manikgank Sadar in Bangladesh were wiped out by a tornado. This violent storm, with a track of about a mile wide, injured over 12,000 and purportedly killed a large number of people. In May 2017, a World Meteorological Organization's committee of experts consisting of climatologists, meteorologists, as well as a physician and a weather historian, concluded that a death toll of 1,300 individuals was the most reliable estimate. As many as 80,000 people were made homeless.
