The most popular social simulation game by monthly active users is The Sims 4, which recorded 10 million monthly active users during the spring of 2020 and has 36 million unique registered players (who either purchased the game or downloaded it through a subscription service such as Playstation Plus) as of 31 March 2021.
It appears that The Sims series is holding onto its position as the biggest name in social simulation, although Nintendo's Animal Crossing is catching up fast. As of 30 September 2021, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 34.85 million copies on the Nintendo Switch.
