The youngest female winner of a Grand Slam singles title in the open era (i.e. since 1968) is Martina Hingis (Switzerland, b. 30 September 1980) who was 16 years 117 days old when she won the first of her five Grand Slam singles titles, at the Australian Open on 25 January 1997. This also makes her the youngest person overall to win a tennis major in the open era.

Monica Seles (USA, b. Yugoslavia, 2 December 1973) had previously been the youngest winner of a singles title at a tennis major in the open era, taking the French Open crown aged 16 years 189 days on 9 June 1990. The youngest person ever to win a Grand Slam singles title was Charlotte "Lottie" Dod (UK, b. 24 September 1871) who won Wimbledon on 6 July 1887 at the age of 15 years 285 days.

Michael Chang (USA, b. 22 February 1972) is the youngest male Grand Slam winner, claiming the French Open singles title on 11 June 1989 at the age of 17 years 109 days.
