Dr Murugappa Chennaveerappa Modi, a pioneer of mass eye surgery in India performed between 1943 - 1993 a total of 610,564 cataract, squint correction and cornea transplant operations, an average of 12,211 a year. Having made as many as 833 cataract operations in one day, he has visited 46,120 villages and 12,118,630 patients.
Dr P. S. Hardia of Indore has performed 515,842 eye operations between 1966 -1999, an average of 15,631 a year.
