The world's largest wind tunnel is at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Palo Alto, California, USA. The largest test section measures 36 x 24 m (118 x 79 ft) and is powered by a bank of six giant 17,000 kW (22,500 hp) fans with blades measuring 12 m (40 ft) from tip to tip. The fans, which are as tall as 7 people, force wind in the tunnel to a top speed of around 185 km/h (115 mph), allowing researchers to test to aerodynamic qualities of full-scale aircraft.
