The largest land-based telescope is the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) based on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. The telescope has a 10.4m primary mirror. The inauguration ceremony took place on 24 July 2009, with first observational measurements commencing with a spectrometer instrument called OSIRIS (Optical System for Imaging and low Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy).
