The Boston marathon, the world's longest-lasting major marathon, was first held on 19 April 1897, when it was run over 39 km (24 miles 1,232 yd). John A. Kelley (USA) finished the Boston Marathon 61 times, winning in 1935 and 1945, between 1928 and 1992. Please note, the first time that the modern-day marathon event was held was in 1896 during the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, and was won by Spiridon Louis (Greece). The race was run from Marathon to Athens (22-26 miles).
