Ricardo rode his 13,000th winner on 25 September 2020 aboard Gloriosa Negra at his hometown racetrack, the Hipodromo da Gavea in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was aged 58. He began competing as a 15-year-old apprentice in 1976 and has spent most of his career racing in South America. His best season in Brazil was in 1992/93, when he rode 477 winners. Ricardo overcame lymphoma in 2009 and has been sidelined for lengthy periods owing to injuries sustained by falls, including a fractured shoulder and broken jaw in 2013, a fractured femur in 2016 and broken vertebrae, a collapsed lung and facial fractures in 2019. For many years Ricardo was involved in a battle with US-based rider Russell Baze for the title of most career winners. He surpassed Baze’s final mark of 12,844 on 7 February 2018, and continues to add to his total.
