The most expensive sporting venue is the SoFi Stadium, located in the Inglewood area of Los Angeles, California, USA. The SoFi stadium is the shared home of the city's two NFL franchises, the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers, and is intended to be used for other major sporting events and performances. Internal NFL documents from 2018 projected the cost of construction would be $4.963 billion, but the final price tag for the stadium is believed to have ballooned to more than $5 billion. The stadium was officially opened on 8 September 2020, and hosted its first game on 13 September between the Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the massive 70,240-capacity stadium was completely empty for the game.
Even if the final bill for construction stayed within the 2018 estimate, the SoFi Stadium's costs would still be more than double the next most costly sports venue – the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada (which cost an estimated $1.9 billion to build).
The stadium was paid for by the Los Angeles Rams (previously the St Louis Rams) owner Stan Kroenke, helped by generous tax deals with the local government. Its naming rights were bought by San Francisco-based company Social Finance Inc. (whose name is commonly abbreviated to SoFi).
The centrepiece of the stadium (perhaps even more so than the field) is its colossal videoboard. This circular, two sided jumbotron weighs 998 tonnes (1,100 US tons) and its displays cover around 6,500 m^2 (70,000 sq ft).
