Flying boats are aircraft with the ability to take off, land and float on water. Despite being at the cutting edge in the early days of flying, development of these aircraft slowed partly due to the range of land-based aircraft improving and partly due to the development of aircraft carriers. Since the Second World War they have had little military or commercial significance.
