In 1991 Kalmar LMV of Lidhult, Sweden manufactured three counterbalanced fork lift trucks capable of lifting loads up to 90 tonnes (198,000 lb) at a load centre of 2.4 m (7.87 ft). They were built to handle the great man-made river project comprising two separate pipelines, one 998 km (620 miles) long running from Sarir to the Gulf of Sirte and the other 897 km (557 miles) from Tazirbu to Benghazi, Libya.
These behemoths weigh in at 116,500 kg (256,838 lb) and are 16.6 m (54 ft 5.5 in) long (including forks) and 4.85 m (15 ft 10.9 in) wide. They have a hydraulically operated elevating system to take the cab to 7.5 m (24 ft 7.2 in) above ground level. TV cameras have been installed to eliminate any blind spots and a remote control device enables the driver to maneuver the truck when not actually in the cab. The forks, measuring 3.65 m (11 ft 11.7 in), can lift their load to a maximum height of 3.8 m (12 ft 5.6 in).
