The youngest winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee is Nihar "The Machine" Janga (USA, b. 18 November 2004), who was named co-champion aged 11 years 190 days at the 89th edition of the event held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, USA, on 26 May 2016 . He shared the title with 13-year-old Jairam Hathwar.
The pair were declared co-winners when, after 24 rounds of spelling in the championship stage of the competition, they were tied. In the 25th round, Janga's final word was "gesellschaft", while Hathwar correctly spelled "Feldenkrais".
On 22 May 2019, Janga also triumphed at the National Geographic Bee, held in Washington, DC, becoming the first ever person to win both that and the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The National Spelling Bee was established in 1925 by a conglomeration of US newspapers; publishing and broadcasting firm The E W Scripps Company took over sponsorship of the contest in 1941. The competition is held annually, though it was cancelled during the wartime years of 1943–45.
