India scored 35 runs – 29 off the bat plus six extras (five wides and a no-ball) – from one over during the delayed Fifth Test between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham, West Midlands, UK, on 2 July 2022.
Bowled by England paceman Stuart Broad to Indian tail-ender Jasprit Bumrah, the over consisted of four fours (balls 1, 4, 5 and 6), two sixes (ball 3 – a no-ball – and ball 7), five wides (ball 2) and a single (ball 8) as the one-over team and individual Test records were smashed in eight chaotic deliveries.
Andy Zaltzman, BBC Test Match Special stats expert: “145 years our world-famous species has been playing Test cricket. There have been over 800,000 overs in that time, but none more expensive than the 35 runs that India scored off Stuart Broad today. 29 off the bat of Jasprit Bumrah, plus six extras. It was truly and utterly extraordinary, smashing the world record for most runs in a Test over, which previously stood at 28.”
That previous record of 28 was set by the West Indies (14 December 2003) and later matched by Australia (16 December 2013) and South Africa (20 January 2020). West Indies legend Brian Lara and Australia’s George Bailey, who both plundered 28 runs from the bat in their teams’ record-breaking Test overs in 2003 and 2013, respectively, also lost their joint individual record to Bumrah, whose 29 runs from the bat was a new Test high.
