The new General Electric GE9X jet engine has a turbine blade span of 3.4 metres (11 feet 1.8 inches) making it 10 centimetres (3.9 inches) bigger than its predecessor and previous largest jet engine, the GE90-115B, which still holds the record for the most powerful jet engine.
The engine nacelle itself is 4.7 metres (15 feet 4 inches) in diameter. It has been certified for use on Boeing's new 777-9 aircraft will be completed in 2019. While the new engine is not as powerful as its predecessor – it is rated for 105,000 lbf (470 kN) of takeoff thrust compared to 115,300 lbf (513 kN) for the GE90-115B – its manufacturer claims it produces 8 dB less noise and is 10% more fuel efficient.
