On 8 August 2018, Nintendo killed Luigi… well, kind of. In a Nintendo Direct video uploaded to YouTube, our green-clad hero was killed by a stroke of Death’s scythe. The blow left Luigi in a heap on the floor, while his spirit was shown fretting around his body. As the story transpired it emerged that the video was merely a publicity stunt for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 2018) and Luigi was in fact OK. A tweet by Nintendo’s “Nintendo UK VS” Twitter account that simply read “Luigi is okay” (sic) had been liked 81,220 times and retweeted a further 26,454 times, as of 5 February 2019.
