Founded in 1964 and still active as of June 2018, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre – based in the 43-square-kilometre (16.6-square-mile) Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve in the Malaysian state of Sabah, Borneo – was the first orangutan rehabilitation facility, as well as the longest to have been in operation. Since it was established, it has rehabilitated more than 300 rescued orphaned orangutans back into the wild. In addition to its primary function of rehabilitation, the centre is also actively involved in public education on conservation, as well as research and assistance in relation to other endangered species.
The Sepilok centre currently employs more than 23 staff and has become one of the leading tourist attractions in Sabah.
