Bionic Commando (1987), released in Japan as Top Secret, was the first videogame to feature the grappling hook as a main gameplay mechanic. The far-reaching tool has since appeared in countless games and has become a popular means of travel in open-world games.

Bionic Commando aka Top Secret was first released as an arcade game and came to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988.

A 2008 remake called Bionic Commando: Rearmed, developed by Grin, also focused on the grappling hook. This time, however, it was part of a bionic arm that also embodies the hero Spencer's deceased wife.
