The largest ship to transit the Panama Canal, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, was the 154,995 tons gross CMA CGM Zephyr (16,285 TEU) on 1 July 2022. The longest vessel is the 396 m (1,299 ft) Triton (14,424 TEU) operated by the Evergreen Corporation which made a trial transit on 15 May 2019, the canal’s limit at the time being 366 m (1,200.8 ft).
The 48-mile (77-km) Panama Canal was expanded with new locks in 2016 to accommodate larger ships referred to as "Neopanamax". Passage of the canal takes approximately 8–10 hours. As well a cost saving for shipping firms, the shortcut also reduces CO₂ emissions by tens of thousands of tons.
