According to a report by the New Atlas technology news website, published on 17 August 2017, India overtook China in the 2016–17 financial year to sell 17.59 million motorcycles – more than any other nation.
Although India claimed the record for the most units sold, the country only managed fourth in a table of the total US$-value of motorcycles exported, compiled by the WorldsTopExports.com website on 12 June 2017.
China came first on this table with US$6 bn in motorcycle exports, Japan second on US$2.4 bn, Germany third with US$1.8 bn and India next with US$1.6 bn.
India’s motorcycle market is dominated by small-engined, low-cost machines – which may explain how it sold so many units without achieving greater revenues.
