Atari released two titles in 1978, both of which are widely regarded to be the first true American football videogames. Atari Football was an arcade coin-op, played with a trackball and featured players represented by noughts and crosses. The even more plainly titled Football was released for the Atari 2600 console and had players that Gamespot describes as resembling "washing machines". It pre-dates Mattel's NFL Football by roughly a year.
