The snake species that can store sperm the longest is the elephant-trunk snake Acrochordus javanicus, a non-venomous aquatic species also known as the Javan wart snake. An adult female can store sperm inside its body's reproductive tract for up to seven years after receiving it during mating with a male. Implantation only takes place when the female judges that a time of plentiful food and clement weather is likely to be arriving. It is native to several Indonesian islands (including Java), as well as to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and possibly Cambodia too.
This unusual species earns its common names from its broad shape and quite baggy skin that make it look somewhat like an elephant's trunk, and the warty appearance of its skin, due to it bearing small, rough-surfaced, wart-like scales. This snake is so aquatic that its body cannot support its weight when out of water, so if it finds itself in such a situation it can incur serious injury.
