The first player to receive a red card at the FIFA World Cup was Carlos Caszely (Chile), during Chile’s match against West Germany on 14 June 1974. Red and yellow cards had been introduced at the 1970 World Cup, although referees had been able to dismiss players from the field of play before that point. The first player to be sent off at the FIFA World Cup was Plácido Galindo (Peru), on 14 July 1930.
