While the films in the Star Wars prequel trilogy (1999–2004) were renowned at the time for their extensive use of digital visual effects, they also featured some equally ground-breaking achievements in the field of practical effects. For the Mos Espa podracing sequences in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), the audience in the Grand Arena consisted of 450,000 hand-painted cotton Q-Tips – more individual miniatures than have been used in any other film sequence.
