The first sealed magnetic implant was performed by Steve Haworth (USA) in 2005. The Arizona-based body-modification pioneer created the implant with fellow body-modification artist Jesse Jarrell and Todd Huffman, a graduate student at Arizona State University. The implant was a neodymium magnet – coated in gold and silicone to seal it from the rest of the body – inserted under the skin of a finger. A similar design is now one of the most popular technological body modifications, allowing the finger to lift small metal objects and sense invisible magnetic fields created by electronic devices as the implant vibrates.
