The fastest time an athlete has recorded over 100, 200 and 400 metres is 72.59 seconds and was achieved by Michael Johnson (USA) between 1994 and 1999.
Michael Johnson was world record holder in 200 metres and 400 metres with times of 19.32 and 43.18 seconds respectively. In his early career he also sometimes ran the 100 metres, and recorded a personal best of 10.09 seconds in Knoxville in August 1994.
In 2016, Wayde Van Nierkerk made history as the first sprinter to run under 10, 20 and 44 seconds in 100, 200 and 400 metres respectively, when he clocked 9.98 seconds in the 100 metres in Blomefontein. At the 2016 Olympics, he broke Johnson's long-standing 400 metres record with a time of 43.03 seconds. His 200 metres record is 19.94 seconds, putting him just outside Johnson's cumulative time with 72.95 seconds.
Although Usain Bolt is the 100 and 200 metre world record holder (with 9.58 and 19.19 seconds), his best 400 metres run is 45.28 seconds, taking him to a cumulative total of 74.05 seconds.
