Istanbul is a city divided by the Bosphorus strait. With its population distributed between the European and Asian side, the city has built the world's largest passenger ferry system, which, according to a comparative study of ferry operators published in 2010, transported more than 100 million passengers and 6.9 million vehicles in 2009. In 2013, İstanbul Deniz Otobüsleri A Ş (İDO), the city's main ferry operator, which was restructured and privatized in 2010, transported 50.5 million passengers and 7.8 million vehicles, while no information was available for the ferries that remained with the public sector for that year.
