Many fungi reproduce by producing spores, and often in exceptionally profuse quantities. Indeed, it is little-realized that fungal spore counts can often exceed flowering plants' pollen counts. The largest fungal spore count ever officially recorded was 5.5 million spores per cubic foot (equivalent to 194 million spores per cubic metre), documented from mould in Wales in 1994.
Placing the above figure into context, the USA's National Allergy Bureau considers 6,500–12,999 spores per cubic metre to constitute a moderate level of outdoor mould spores, and 13,000–49,999 spores per cubic metre to constitute a high level.
