Venus Williams (USA) tied Kathleen "Kitty" McKane Godfree (UK) for the most Olympic medals won – five – after claiming mixed doubles silver with Rajeev Ram in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 14 August 2016. Venus also took singles and women's doubles gold at Sydney 2000 and won the women's doubles at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. She partnered sister Serena Williams for her hat-trick of women's doubles gold medals. Godfree (1896–1992) won her five Olympic medals (one gold, two silver and two bronze) at two successive Games – Antwerp 1920 and Paris 1924.
Godfree won women's doubles gold (with Winifred McNair), mixed doubles silver (with Max Woosnam) and singles bronze at Antwerp 1920, and women's doubles silver (with Phyllis Covell) and singles bronze at Paris 1924.
Five players have won four Olympic tennis medals: Serena Williams (USA; 4 gold, 2000–12); Reginald Doherty (UK; 3 gold, 1 bronze, 1900–08); Charles Dixon (UK; 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze, 1908–12); Arantxa Sánchez Vicario (Spain; 2 silver, 2 bronze, 1992–96); Gunnar Setterwall (Sweden; 2 silver, 2 bronze, 1908–12).
Tennis was included at the Olympic Games in 1896–1924 and again from 1988 onwards. It was a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984.
