With a top speed of 315 km/h, the CH-47F Chinook is the fastest military helicopter in the world, and the second fastest overall. Manufactured by Boeing Rotorcraft Systems, the Chinook has tandem rotors at the front and back of the airframe, negating the need for a tail rotor. The first Chinook design first flew on 21 September 1961 and its latest variants are still under production, with over 1,200 having been built so far. More than 20 countries currently operate Chinook helicopters, which are mainly used for heavy lifting of up to 55 troops or equipment. The CH-47F modern variant is armed with three mounted machine guns – one on either side and one on the loading ramp.
